A celebration of International Day of Disabled People

Friday 3 December 2021, 12.00pm - 4.00pm
At Manchester Central Library

Jointly organised by Manchester City Council, Manchester Libraries and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Hands-on workshop with Venture Arts, disability history films screenings and panel discussion. 

There will be light refreshments and BSL interpretation.

We are pleased to tell you about a new GMCDP project which began on 15 October. The 3-year project, funded by Wellcome, will gradually make the GMCDP archive collection available. It is part of the Disabled People’s Archive housed in Archives+ at Manchester Central Library.

The Archive is a collection of documents, reports, books, posters, postcards, audio-visual and other material. It has all been donated to the archive by individuals and disabled people’s organisations, including GMCDP.

A recent high court case appeal for available termination dates for disabled pregnancies to be equalised has been lost. Guardian report about the case

Don't Screen Us Out campaign has highlighted that when a disabled pregnancy is confirmed, it may be terminated any time til birth - while other pregnancies have a much earlier cut off date. 

The deadline for applying to be part of our exciting Young Creatives Programme, alongside Contact and Archives+ is fast approaching.

GMCDP is amongst a group of disabled people's organisations to speak out against the government's recently announced national disability strategy. The full text of the press release / statement is below.

‘Understanding the needs of DPOs in England’ – launch of research report into the state of the DPO sector in England

We are very pleased to have contributed to this report! GMCDP ran focus groups and "mapped" the sector in the North West whilst other regional disabled people's organisations did the same in other parts of the country.

GMCDP’s (online) office will be closed from the close of business on Friday 19th of December until Monday 4th of January. There will still be posts on social media throughout this time.

GMCDP has contributed to this year’s International Day Of Disabled People, working with Manchester Archive+ and Manchester City Council. The programme features as some films by GMCDP and an appearance from GMCDP’s very own Dennis Queen. The programme is as follows:

The National Emergency Trust has announced £1.5 million of funding to support grassroots Disabled Peoples Organisations (DPOs) across the UK to respond to the Covid-19 needs of disabled people.

The DPO Covid-19 Emergency Fund aims to support DPOs to meet the needs of disabled people, and are looking to fund the following broad three areas:

• Independent living

• Isolation

• Income

• A DPO wanting funding to produce local Covid-19 related information in
