Disabled History Month: Screening of "The Best Of Men" - Sunday 10th December, University of Manchester

The Univeristy of Manchester are screening The Best Of Men on Sunday December 10th (7:30pm-10pm), which charts the events that led to the creation ofthe Paralympic games. This screening is open to all interested in the history of disabled people, not just Univeristy of Manchester students.

Takeover ‘is landmark sign of business noticing disabled people’s spending power’

The sale of a business set up by two disabled entrepreneurs to the online travel giant Airbnb is a “landmark” sign that businesses are taking more notice of disabled people’s spending power, according to the duo.

The Accomable website, set up by childhood friends Srin Madipalli and Martyn Sibley, has announced that it is being taken over by US-based Airbnb.

Chancellor ignores social care, weeks after UN’s independent living warning

Disabled campaigners have criticised the chancellor’s failure to provide any money in the budget to solve the social care funding crisis, despite a warning from the UN.

Although Philip Hammond announced some extra funding for the NHS, there was no mention of social care in his budget speech, or in the main budget report.

Benefit assessors ‘must be held accountable’ for report failings, MPs hear

The healthcare professionals who carry out disability benefit assessments on behalf of the government should be held accountable for failing to report what they are told accurately, MPs have been told.

Members of the Commons work and pensions select committee were told repeatedly this week that assessors working for the outsourcing giants Atos, Capita and Maximus were producing reports that did not reflect what they had been told by the disabled people they were assessing.

Research linking care cuts to 120,000 deaths ‘is fresh evidence austerity kills’

“Indisputable” new research has linked government cuts in adult social care and health spending to nearly 120,000 “excess” deaths in England since 2010.

The research, published just before midnight last night (Wednesday) by the online journal BMJ Open, concludes that people over 60 and residents of care homes have been particularly affected by the spending cuts.

New minister for disabled people criticised by her local DPO over voting record

The new minister for disabled people is facing criticism over her voting record on disability issues from a user-led organisation that provides support in her own constituency.

The Cornish MP Sarah Newton was appointed as the new minister late last week as a replacement for Penny Mordaunt, who has been promoted to international development secretary.
