What the Commission does:
- Based in the UK Parliament but is independent of government and aims to be cross-party
- Collects evidence from communities across the UK
- Gathers testimonies from people with lived experience
- Engages experts, charities, unions and campaigners
The Commission was set up by:
- The Right to Food Campaign
- Ian Byrne MP (Liverpool West Derby)
- University of Westminster
- Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU)
- Food and Work Network
GMCDP are partnering with commissioners to gather the expertise and living experience of disabled people. This is particularly important as the majority of foodbank users are disabled people.
This is an opportunity to contribute your experiences and ideas, to shape what a new Right to Food law should look like.
The meeting is Online using Zoom and BSL will be provided. Once you have registered you will receive the Agenda & more information.
Four questions we want you to help answer:
1. How has feeding your family changed in the last two years?
- Have there been any improvements?
- What makes it hard for you, your family, or your community to get enough quality food?
2. Coping mechanisms and support. Now let’s explore how you are coping with feeding yourself and your family. What changes have you had to make? What support have you had?
- What help do you currently access to get enough good food?
- This could be food banks, community kitchens, school meals, local charities, government programs, or family support.
- What works well? What doesn’t work well
3. Name one support intervention- What one thing would make a difference for you and your family?
(Such as having free school meals, community kitchens, community gardens, community support hubs, a living wage.)
4. Food is a human right. Now let’s imagine that there was a law that guarantees the Right to Food.
- What minimums should it guarantee – what are the things no one should live without?
- What should local or national governments have to do to make sure everyone can access enough good food?
- Think about quality, affordability, access, and equality.
